The Four Pillars
OIS consists of four departments; Preschool, Kindergarten, Elementary and Middle School. Each department is independent of one another and is giving a high-quality academic program in accordance with its age, however, four departments always work together and provide information to each other in order to offer consistent education from Preschool to Middle School. The preparation for High School department has already begun and we are aiming to maintain a consistent IB education program from PYP through DP.
It is a small society that is called a school, but I am interested in various things, and children act by themselves and challenge it and repeat their research. The habit of research connects from the 3-year-old class to the International Baccalaureate program.
A curriculum is made in collaboration with foreign teachers and Japanese childcare teachers in order to create the environment in which children can learn English naturally and pleasantly.
I perform an activity or extracurricular activities to a theme, and Children learn English and a basic lifestyle by engaging in activities and extracurricular activities every month. Children acquire their languages from their environment naturally without being instructed, the most ideal age to start such language acquisition is a preschool time.
The Kindergarten Department includes Owlet, Eaglet 1 and Eaglet 2.
Each class has two teachers. They work collaboratively in planning, preparing and making the lessons and curriculum.
The students enjoy learning in a conducive English environment. They are encouraged and engaged to ask questions in different learning experiences. This will surely build a strong foundation in his/her early childhood life.
Elementary program lasts from First Grade to Sixth Grade. The primary language of instruction is English while Japanese is used in Calligraphy and Japanese language classes. Inquiry is the pedagogical approach to teaching and learning of the PYP, which allows students to be actively involved in their learning. Some grades are combined to hold multi-level class and students enjoy learning together, sharing knowledge and helping each other.
In the Elementary program we aim to broaden the thinking of the students by encouraging them to express their curiosity about things around them and widen their willingness to see things in different perspectives. This eventually leads to reflection on their learning and to deeper connection with the society.
Four years from Grade 7 through Grade 10 (first grade of high school) is OIS middle school. OIS middle school is operated in accordance with the International Baccalaureate program. Middle school education is not based on the traditional knowledge and textbook-centered but is carried out to enhance and further deepen the inquiry-based education that students had experienced in Primary Years Program (PYP). It emphasizes the interdisciplinary learning of the different subjects so that the students could develop intellectual curiosity through integrated and comprehensive understanding of tradition, history, culture, language of their own, etc. Social contributions and volunteer activities are mandatory, and all the subjects have been taught in English except for the ones that Japanese is required.
Summer School is a great opportunity to expose and immerse your child in an English environment.
Every year more than 400 students join our Summer School Program.
